To facilitate interaction of our congregants in all aspects of online/email communication. | ||

Do you Yahoo?
Why you should have a Yahoo ID.
There are several ways of announcing something to the B'nai Tikvah community. Choose from the following methods which you feel would be most appropriate:
eGroup
Over 140 families are subscribed to the eGroup mailing list. Send your message, using your normal e-mail program, addressed to: eGroup@BnaiTikvah.org. If you are not an eGroup member, your message can be sent indirectly via the announcement form. Please consider subscribing to receive feedback from the rest of the group.
eGroup Footer
Every eGroup message, sent by it's members, can contain a line or two of "footer text". You may request a message, usually in the format of a "reminder" to be placed in this footer. The footer will be removed at the discretion of the moderator after a reasonable amount of repetitions, or upon request.
CBT Newsletter
This e-mail list reaches a wider congregational audience (over 360 members) and is used by the Administrator to deliver the weekly announcements. Requests for help or tzedakah and other news of importance to our congregants will be posted ASAP at the Administrator's discretion. Non-BT related tzedakah notices should be sent to subscribers of our uncensored eGroup or to the Webmaster for posting on the web site.
Special Notices
This is a "priority" feature of the CBT Newsletter and has the widest distribution. It is used at the discretion of the Administrator for emergencies and other one-time events.
Web Bulletin Board
These notices are displayed in a section of the web site that follows the Shabbat details. This method is least intrusive and is ideal for non-commercial, classified advertising.
Lobby LCD Monitor
A 32" display screen is installed in the wall of the main entrance. This is an excellent way to give exposure to your upcoming events. On average, about 12 slides are continuously displayed at 4 second intervals. Therefore, your slides must be "eye-catching" without providing too much detail. More information about the system and what you need to do is provided at the monitor's webpage. You can send your prepared slide files in .JPG format to .
Weekend Announcements
These encompass the following four ways of getting your message out:
|
Phone Tree
A recorded message is telephoned to every congregational family. Only the Administrative Director can authorize the use of this system. Use of the Phone Tree is highly discouraged because, 1) it doesn't necessarily reach everyone, 2) some congregants find it to be intrusive, 3) it's expensive, and 4) it ties up the Synagogue's incoming and outgoing fax line for an entire day.
|
on the web site Bulletin Board as a "Weekend Announcement" to all CBT Newsletter subscribers as a Special Newsletter Notice to all members of the eGroup list on the eGroups message footer |
Congregants are notified of emergency meetings, shivah minyans, and weekly synagogue activities via this e-mail group newsletter. Only the Administrative Director and other authorized members can directly post messages to subscribers of this group. You can view all previous postings by logging into the group's website with your Yahoo-id.

Normal
|
To change this YahooGroup option yourself, go to the group website, click "Edit My Membership", and choose from the list of message delivery options.
Members of the B'nai Tikvah eGroup, are automatically subscribed to this newsletter.
(BT·LIST: ONEList)
Congregants are encouraged to discuss issues affecting the synagogue, its members, and the community at large through the Bnaitikvah eGroup. The eGroup is exclusive to B'nai Tikvah members and can be used to offer, or solicit help from other congregants. You can view all previous postings by logging into the group's website with your Yahoo-id.
|
Name: E-mail address: |
No postings on the Sabbath
It is not unusual for messages on the internet to have incorrect posting dates. So, please be very tactful before you flame someone for a Sabbath posting.
No attachments
You cannot send an attached file to the eGroup. They are automatically removed. Even a .TXT file can hide a virus. To foward a message, copy/paste it into "open code" and please remove all the > characters. Multiple >>>s are the signs of an Urban Legend.
Limit your replies
First, count to 10 and ask yourself if a reply is really necessary. "Me too" postings are very annoying. Then decide if your reply should go to all members, or just to an individual congregant.
Use descriptive subject lines
Change it to correspond with your "topic". The need becomes apparent when you're trying to find a message in the eGroup archives.
Avoid Hoaxes and Urban Legends
When you see the phrase "Forward this to everyone you know.", please DON'T. They can all be found at various fun-to-read archives, the San Fernando Valley Folklore Society, or search by keyword phrase.
Delete redundant text
Please remove, from your reply, any text not relevant in your response. Page down to double check your message before hitting the "send" button.
Avoid UPPER CASE
Upper case in e-mail is equivalent to SHOUTING IN A NORMAL CONVERSATION.
Expressions & Acronyms
|
Touch your left shoulder with your left ear to make sense of these emoticons. :-)
FWIW, you can look up 110,700 "chat room" abbreviations at The Acronym Finder. |
Don't Multi-cast
If you wish to share a message with others outside the group, simply forward them a separate copy. By exposing them to the group, our members may not realize they're replying to outsiders.
Self Censorship
The moderators strongly believe this list should be totally open to the congregation. Please be courteous (where possible) to your fellow congregants. :-)
If you have any questions or opinions of the above, please discuss it with the webmaster.
Q: How do I send a message to all eGroup subscribers?
|
A: First review our guidelines if you haven't recently done so.
Then use your normal e-mail
program, addressing the message to:
If your message is an "Official Announcement", you can reach a wider audience by posting it to the CBT Newsletter. See the various ways to make an announcement. |
Q: How can I view older messages?
A: Every message posted to the group, since its inception in August 1999, is in the message archives where you can view them by Date or Subject.
Q: What is OneList?
A: OneList hosted our initial e-mail list before merging with eGroups, a similar service which allowed organizations and individuals to maintain their own topical mailing lists. (eGroups was later acquired by Yahoo.)
|
Q: Who pays for this service? |
A: It's totally free. Yahoo earns revenue by selling advertising space at the bottom of each message. B'nai Tikvah does not endorse these advertising blurbs.
Q: How is the group monitored?
A: The Bnaitikvah eGroup was established in August of 1999 by congregant Dan Greenberg who, in addition to Gary Bergman, is a registered moderator. The moderators do not impose any form of censorship, however, they are responsible for restricting the list to congregation members and have the ability to remove any unwanted subscribers.
Q: Why do we have two mailing lists?
A: The eGroup initially served all our needs. It was later discovered that several congregants wanted to be informed of important events but, didn't want to be involved in discussions amongst other congregants. The CBT Newsletter was then created to distribute the weekly announcements and other important notices from the synagogue. When you join the eGroup, you will also be subscribed to the newsletter.
Please address all questions and concerns to the B'nai Tikvah webmaster.
First check the B'nai Tikvah and local community calendars to insure your event does not coincide or conflict with other events in the area.
Free Media Publicity
For wide-spread publicity, you must notify us at least 6 weeks in advance of your Synagogue event. Some media absolutely require 4 weeks notice at a minimum (e.g., New Jersey section of the New York Times). The earlier a release is submitted, the better your chances are of having it published.
Paid Advertising
The publicity committee can help you investigate the costs and advise how and where to place an ad. Paid advertising is the responsibility of the event committee and must be paid for from the committee's budget. If a committee wishes the synagogue to pay for an ad, the cost of the ad must have been included as part of their budget request prepared for the Board's budgeting committee before the budget is formulated.
Distribution
The information you supply will be forwarded to the Hakol, the Webmaster, and the office Administrator who will respond to telephone inquiries. The deadline for Hakol submissions is the 15th of each month.

@ B'nai Tikvah
A Yahoo ID is not an e-mail address. It is a unique name that identifies you as belonging to certain eGroups with full access privileges. You need a Yahoo ID to access documents, archives, and features of the various Group Websites. When applying for your Yahoo-id, don't be mislead into getting an email address that you don't need or be duped into signing up for mail offers that you don't want. After you get your id, link it by visiting the various eGroup sites that you are subscribed to.
Every B'nai Tikvah group, club, or committee can (and should) have their own private eGroup. It gives you a centralized address book where only the list owner needs to keep it up-to-date. As the list owner, you control the membership and determine the policy.
