Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What amount of supermarket gift cards am I required to purchase?
A: Seniors and Single members are asked to purchase $1,200 per year. All other members, $2,400 per year ($100 per month or $200 per month of A&P, Acme, ShopRite, or Stop N Shop).

Q: How much does it really cost me?
A: It costs you nothing. You get 100% value of all goods purchased. B'nai Tikvah benefits by obtaining the cards at a 5% discount.

Q: Are there any additional supermarkets that participate in this program?
A: Acme gift cards are accepted at Albertsons (mostly in Florida). Unfortunately, Wegmans does not offer a similar program for non-profits. A&P also honors all Pathmark cards.

Q: What if I don't wish to purchase any gift cards, can I pay my way out?
A: Yes, Seniors/Single members can pay $60 to "opt out" of the program. All other members may pay $120 to "opt out". These amounts represent 5% of your annual purchase obligation.

Q: What happens if I buy less than the required amount, will I still receive credit? What if I buy more?
A: Yes, you receive credit for whatever amount you buy, up to the amount required. The more you buy, the more we earn. However, there is no extra credit if you buy more than required.

Q: How will I know where I stand with purchases and how will the billing work?
A: We will bill, as a separate item, the full amount of either $60 or $120 on August 1. On the next bill, on November 1, we will give you credit for any purchases. For example, if you purchased $300 of supermarket cards, you will see a credit of $15: for $600 in purchases, a credit of $30.

Q: How are credits calculated?
A: Supermarket gift card purchases earn you a 5% credit towards your goal. Home Depot and Lox Stock & Deli earn 3% and 4% respectively. Jesse & David's gift cards earn you 10% credit.

Q: Will credit cards/on line payments be accepted?
A: No, we can only accept cash or checks. The cost of processing credit cards and on-line payments almost cancels out the earnings.

Q: If I opt-out, when are my payments due?
A: If you do not wish to buy gift cards, then we ask that you pay your quarterly amount on the next quarterly due date with the balance of your synagogue charges.

Q: How much extra revenue does B'nai Tikvah earn?
A: We expect to generate an extra $12,000-$15,000 per year.

Q: What if I live outside of the area for part of the year (Florida, for example), am I required to purchase?
A: We will make adjustments for significant time periods (2 months or longer) you live outside the area.

Q: Can I receive credit for new sales to non-members that I generate?
A: Yes, as long as they are properly identified and are not existing sales, you can use them to offset your purchase requirement.
